AdminHistory | This collection comprises marriage registers from closed Methodist Chapels. Upon the closure of a chapel, the registers were sent to the Registrar General and were formerly deposited at the Methodist Archives and Research Centre in London. These registers have now been deposited at local archive services. A duplicate set of the registers should be held by the Sheffield Register Office.
The chapels listed in this catalogue are under the title used in the earliest register, with notes of later changes of title. In cases where registers date from before the Methodist Union of 1932, the connection of the chapel is given where it is not obvious.
The official number of the chapel is also given as is the date of the official closure of the last register by the Registrar General. This may, in some instances, give an indication as to when the chapel was closed. |
CustodialHistory | On the abolition of South Yorkshire County Council on 31 March 1986, these records passed from South Yorkshire County Record Office (SYCRO) to the custody of Sheffield Archives. On 1 Apr 2009 the ownership of these items was split between the four district offices (Doncaster items having been transferred to Doncaster Archives in February 2009). Barnsley items were transferred to Barnsley Archives in Sep 2010 and Rotherham items were transferred to Rotherham Archives in Oct 2010. |
