AdminHistory | The main objective of the Department of Recreation, Culture and Health was 'to improve the recreational life of the people of South Yorkshire through the provision, maintenance and conservation of facilities and through the promotion of associated activities.'
In the 1970s, the terms of reference of the Recreation, Culture and Health Committee were as follows:
1. Matters relating to the overall provision, availability and maintenance of leisure amenity, entertainment, community and social facilities and activities generally.
2. Matters relating to recreation including facilities relative to or provided at: Country parks Parks, open spaces and commons (other than registration) Recreation grounds Sports centres and facilities Swimming pools Public access to the countryside (including footpaths and bridleways and Definitive Map) Nature reserves and bird sanctuaries Tourist camping and caravan sites Picnic sites Waterways, canals and reservoirs.
3. Matters relating to culture and the arts including facilities relative to or provided at: Museums Art galleries Theatres Concert halls and opera houses.
4. Promotion of tourism and tourist facilities.
5. Matters relating to health and water not allocated to other Committees including liaison with the Area and Regional Health Authorities and the Regional Water authorities.
6. The operational management of country parks and other facilities provided by the County Council or in association with the District Councils.
7. Archives and records.
8. Agriculture, other than functions within the terms of reference of another Committee, including land drainage, disease of animals and animal welfare and wildlife protection. |
