TitleWest Riding of Yorkshire County Council
AdminHistoryThe West Riding of Yorkshire County Council was established in 1889 and was the predecessor authority to South Yorkshire County Council. The West Riding of Yorkshire County Council was responsible for the local adminstration of the area now known as South Yorkshire up until April 1974, as well as other parts of Yorkshire (the West Riding of Yorkshire was a historic subdivision of Yorkshire encompassing Sheffield in the south to Sedbergh in the north and from Slaidburn in the west to Adlingfleet in the east). The metropolitan county of South Yorkshire was created on 1 April 1974 (as a result of local government reorganisation triggered by the Local Government Act 1972) and the newly established South Yorkshire County Council took over local authority responsibilities for the South Yorkshire area from the West Riding of Yorkshire County Council. The West Riding County Council was formerly based at the County Hall, Wakefield (the headquarters of which were taken over by the West Yorkshire County Council in 1974).

Note: these records only represent a small fraction of those created by the West Riding of Yorkshire County Council and do not fully reflect the range of departments and activities of the Council. The surviving files were those retained by the successor authority (South Yorkshire County Council) evidently on the basis that they were judged useful for continuity purposes. Some files post-date the lifespan of the West Riding of Yorkshire County Council and run into the period when the South Yorkshire County Council had taken over as the local authority and apparently kept the files 'live'.
