TitleBotanical Gardens Committee
AdminHistoryIn 1833 the Sheffield Botanical and Horticultural Society was formed. A year later, in 1834, it opened the Botanical Gardens at Clarkehouse Road (there was also an entrance near Ecclesall Road). In 1844 the first society suffered from financial probelms and was wound up. A new society with the same name was formed shortly after. In 1897 the Town Trust took over the gardens (and provided free admission). In 1951 the gardens were offered to the City Council for a peppercorn rent. In 1996, the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust was formed.
