AdminHistory | Grimesthorpe Boys' Club, Sheffield, established in 1953, was a local branch of the Sheffield Council of Boys' Clubs - a regional division of the Yorkshire Association of Boys' Clubs, which in turn was a county division of the National Association of Boys' Clubs (NABC). The NABC was formed by Royal Charter in 1925 and emerged as a leading national youth organisation, providing opportunities and activities for young people in the most disadvantaged areas of the UK.
Although affiliated to the NABC, the operation of Grimesthorpe Boys' Club rested entirely on the endeavour of unpaid volunteers, receiving no direct financial assistance from the local authorities. The club occupied specifically built premises at 33 Wincobank Lane, Sheffield. In the late 1970s, it had as many as 70 boys on the roll. It ran various activities for its members such as sports (including football and cricket teams), a brass/silver band, dramatic performances, social events, trips and sponsored holidays.
In the 1950s and 1960s Mr J E North was leader of Grimesthorpe Boys' Club with the brothers Trevor and Keith Lemm acting as assistant leaders and Mr J Booker holding the role of club steward. Around 1970 Trevor Lemm assumed leadership of the club before becoming leader of Hillsborough Boys' Club. Keith later succeeded his brother Trevor as club leader with John Turner becoming assistant youth leader. |
