AdminHistory | On 11 Mar 1864, the Dale Dike Reservoir was breached by a storm causing a flood which devastated areas in and around Sheffield. Water swept down the Loxley valley through Low Bradfield down to Hillsborough and into Sheffield destorying mills, grinding wheels and warehouses as well as inns and domestic dwellings. Over 4,000 houses were flooded and 240 deaths were reported. Following a special Act of Parliament, compensation of £273,988 was paid for damage to property, injury to persons, and loss of life. |
