AdminHistory | William Arthur (Billy) Heeley was the son of Jack and Lily Heeley of Chapeltown, Sheffield. He was the second eldest of five children. Born in 1920, he died in 1942. During the Second Wolrd War he served as a leading air fitter on HMS Eagle (his service number was FAA/FX. 80376). HMS Eagle was sunk on 11 August 1942 after being hit by four torpedoes fired from a German U Boat. Of the crew of over 900, 160 were killed. Billy made it into the sea but swallowed too much oil and died. He was buried at sea and he is featured on a memorial at Lee-on-Solent in Scotland (bay 3 panel 3). |
