AdminHistoryBennett was born in Sheffield where his father was an organist. Both his parents were dead by 1819 when he went to Cambridge to live with his grandfather. As well as working as a concert pianist and composer, Bennett taught at the Royal Academy of Music from 1837 and was later its Director. He founded the Bach Choir in 1849, was conductor of the Philharmonic Society from 1855 and Professor of Music at Cambridge from 1856. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.

DescriptionIlluminated address to Sir William Sterndale Bennett from former pupils and residents of Sheffield, Bennett's place of birth, to congratulate him on knighthood. Signatories include Thomas Moore (Mayor), William Brugges (Master Cutler) and Sir John Brown. Illuminations by Frank R Smith include titles of Bennett's major compositions.
