Description | Sheffield Civil Aid Association (SCAA) was an emergency organisation with members trained to help the full-time police, fire and ambulance services in the event of a local or national disaster. Training was given in subjects such as rescue, first aid, emergency feeding, improvised communications and incident control. It was part of the National Voluntary Civil Aid Services (NVCAS).
The organisation was originally called the Sheffield Civil Defence Recreational Association and was formed to provide social, educational and recreational activities for members of the Sheffield Corps. A Home Office circular calling for the cessation of all Civil Defence training by 31 Mar 1968 was met with protest from The National Federation of Civil Defence Associations (including a length list of signatures from the Sheffield Corps). At an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 9 Feb 1968, the Sheffield Association unanimously agreed to continue Civil Defence training.
The word 'Recreational' was dropped from the Association's title in 1968, becoming Sheffield Civil Defence Association (SCDA). In 1969 the title was changed again to Sheffield Civil Aid Association (SCAA) and the constitution was amended so as to provide Civil Aid to local authorities in local or national emergencies. |
