TitleSheffield City Council - byelaws regulating the employment of children in the City of Sheffield
AdminHistoryAmongst other things (such as Sunday working, working outdoors etc.) these byelaws prohibited children (aged 15 plus) from working as a lather boy in a barbers or hairdressers, working in kitchens in any hotel or food shop; as a marker or attender in any billiard or bagatelle saloon or other place licenced for games; in the sale of intoxicating liquors (unless sold in sealed vessels); working in theatres, musical halls, picture theatres for the place of public entertainment; collecting or sorting rags or refuse; in any fairground used for amusement by automatic machines, mutoscopes [for viewing flip card 'films'], shooting ranges, games of chance or skill, etc.; in any slaughterhouse; in or in connection with any racing course; in the delivery of milk; in any agricultural work involving heavy strain and, in particular in extracting sugar beet crops from the ground; in any agricultural work under the control of a gang master.
