TitleSharrow Cycling Club, Sheffield
AdminHistoryOfficial club year books of the early twentieth century record that Sharrow Cycling Club was founded in 1886. However, its first meeting was early the following year, attended by two men, William Constantine and Ernest Ward, and officers elected for the first year included a President (Ellis Ashmead Bartlett, M.P. for Ecclesall), Vice-President (H. Styring), Captain (William Constantine) and Sub-Captain (Ernest Ward). A Honorary Secretary, Treasurer and Bugler were also elected at this time (the bugler went ahead of the cyclists, sounding a warning of their approach).

At the outset the club was affiliated to the Cyclists' Touring Club, and later the National Cyclists' Union and the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Centre. The first official club run was to Dore Moor in April 1887, with nine members. Early Rule Books record the club's headquarters and meeting place as the Pomona Hotel, Ecclesall Road. In 1914 the Brincliffe Oaks Hotel was selected as the new headquarters.

Early social events organised by the committee included dances, a series of 'smoking concerts' and Ladies' Days (the latter first held in September 1888). Football, cricket and water polo teams were also formed by members of the club.

In 1910 the club became affiliated to both the Road Records Association and the Northern Road Records Association.

In an attempt to arrest the decline in active members, the club offered free membership to all new juniors in 1970 (and again in 1971). The club's first three female members were elected in 1976. Membership at the end of 1983 totalled 39, of which only 40% took an active part in the club. At the end of the following year the total had dropped to 19, with no junior members.
