AdminHistory | The Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association (FA) was originally known simply as the Sheffield Football Association (FA) and can trace its origins back to 1867 when it was made up of various Sheffield football clubs, including Brightside, Broomhall, Collegiate, Exchange, Fir Vale, Garrick, Hallam, Heeley, Milton, Mackenzie, Norfolk, Norton, Pitsmoor, Sheffield, United Mechanics, Wednesday and Wellington.
It is thought to be one of the oldest football governing bodies in the country and originally convened its own rules for the local Sheffield football clubs affiliated to it. The first president of the Sheffield FA in 1867 was Harry W. Chambers who was also honorary secretary of the Sheffield Football Club. As well as administering football at a local level, the Sheffield FA (later the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA) arranged inter-association matches with representative Sheffield sides, playing other Associations such as London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, etc.
A notable former longstanding president of the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA was Sir John Charles Clegg (1850 - 1937) with his brother Sir William Edwin Clegg (1852 - 1932) serving as vice president.
At the time of writing (August 2021), the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA (based at Clegg House, 204 Meadowhall Road, Sheffield) was responsible for the administration, control, promotion and development of grassroots' football within a 20-mile radius of Sheffield Cathedral. |
