AdminHistory | The Yorkshire Engine Company was established in 1865 and was based at Meadow Hall Works, Wincobank, Sheffield. The company manufactured steam locomotives and rolling stock and later (from 1950) diesel engines. Yorkshire Engine Company mainly built shunting engines for the domestic market but also constructed mainline engines for overseas' customers. Over the course of its 100 year history, the Yorkshire Engine Company built almost 1,200 steam and diesel locomotives.
The Yorkshire Engine Company was acquired by the United Steel Companies Group in 1945. Yorkshire Engine Company ceased operations in 1965 and the firm's Meadow Hall Works was transferred to McCall and Company which was also part of the United Steel Companies Group. The United Steel Companies Group later became part of British Steel PLC. |

CustodialHistory | The bulk of the production and sales records were received from the Yorkshire Engine Company Drawing Office on the closure of Meadow Hall Works in 1965. There were further deposits of material from representatives of the firm in May 1983 and Oct 1987 with a later large deposit of mainly corporate and management records received from British Steel PLC (Northern Regional Records Office, Middlesbrough) in Feb 1994. |
