Activity | Sheffield International Linking Committee (SILC) was set up in January 1994 by local councillors with a view to extending and promoting the city's international links, fostering overseas friendship and encouraging economic activity. It aimed to raise the profile of the city and develop understanding between different cultures. Its formation followed a meeting between representatives of a number of voluntary town twinning and linking organisations, under the chairmanship of the former Lord Mayor Reg Munn, designed to look at communications between the groups and the role they might have in developing the international dimension of Sheffield life. During the lifetime of the committee, Sheffield was twinned with the cities of Anshan in China, Bochum in Germany, Donetsk in the Ukraine and Esteli in Nicaragua. The city also enjoyed friendship links with Kitwe in Zambia, Kawasaki in Japan, Pittsburgh in the USA and Kotli in Kashmir. The organisation was supported by external grants, including funding from Sheffield City Council. The committee wound up at the end of August 2009. |
