Admin HistoryEdwyn Seymour Reid Tait was born in Lerwick on 14 January 1885. He was the second child of George Reid Tait, a local merchant, and Johan Frances Johnson, from Yell.

Tait was a draper by trade and had a shop on Commercial Street. He was an avid collector of printed, published and manuscript material concerning Shetland, and built up a huge library of Shetland literature and records.

Over a period of thirty years he edited and published major works about Shetland's history, notably the Hjaltland Miscellany (5 volumes, 1934-1957) and the Lerwick Miscellany (1955), extracts from local documents. He was a founder of the Shetland Folk Society, and edited the first two volumes of the Shetland Folk Book, in 1947 and 1951.

In 1922 he married Jemima Brown, from Lerwick; they had two children.

Tait died on 6 November 1960.
