Description | Pattern books were called key books and split into different series according to the type of fabric. The Canvas Keys contain samples of named fabrics - which are indexed at the back - plus the names and geographic location of customers, dates of when the fabric was stocked, and whether it was a trial, order or experimental run. Occasionally other information like the price of the piece, minimum order, and estimated time of delivery are also noted. Names of designers of fabric are not recorded. Early books feature very Arts and Crafts inspired figured canvas and jute. Plain coloured canvas, damasks, scrims, matting and stripes feature throughout. |
