I haven't a clue where to start! What do I do?

If you’re looking for something specific, try typing a name (e.g. ‘Mary’) into the search box at the top of the page. You could search for an object (e.g. ‘cup’) or a location within the Minster (e.g. ‘All Saints Chapel’). You might like to search for different materials, such as stone, silk or silver.

Try to keep your search terms simple and if you can’t find something first time, try to think of another way to describe it instead.

You can also use the 'Advanced search' on the left to search by date or period, or if you already know an item's reference number. And you can limit your search to either Objects or Archives & Manuscripts using the Collections Area box.

Is this everything?

Not quite! Records currently online include Monuments, Silver Plate, Furnishings, Treasures & Memorabilia, Windows and some of our archives and manuscript collections. Textiles, Archaeology, Worked Stone and more of the archives and manuscript collections are still to be launched so do keep checking! You can find out which archives and manuscript collections have been added to the catalogue by downloading the 'Accessing the Collections' document on our Collections webpage.

I’ve found something really interesting. How can I find out more?

Each catalogue entry’s Related Documentation section details the relevant books we hold in the Minster Library. You’re welcome to come in and browse the reference books, or make an appointment to see archives and special collections.

How can I find my relative’s gift?

Try searching for their name or part of their name using an advanced search. You could search for the type of item or where it was placed in the Minster. If an object has an inscription, try searching for part of that. Unfortunately, not all information was recorded as accurately as we would have liked in the past – if you can tell us more about the history of an item then please do get in touch!

I’ve found what I was looking for. Can I come and see it?

If it’s not on display in the Minster you will need to make an appointment by emailing collections@yorkminster.org. Include the reference number (e.g. ‘YORDC.2014.93’) and indicate when you would like to see it – remember to give at least 24 hours’ notice.

What may I do with the images in the catalogue?

The images in our catalogue are for private study. If you would like to use an image for another purpose, please email collections@yorkminster.org to arrange this.

The object I want doesn’t have a photograph. Why not?

We’re working hard to photograph all the objects on our catalogue but occasionally we can’t, for example if they’re too fragile or if they are inaccessible.

Can I contribute to the catalogue?

We welcome your thoughts and comments. If you have any information about collection items, please email collections@yorkminster.org.

What do I do if I want to offer something to the collection?

We can consider items for gift or loan in accordance with our Collection Development Policy. If you would like to request a copy of the Collection Development Policy please email collections@yorkminster.org. Unfortunately we cannot accept donations without prior discussion.
