Activity | The original building was given to the Society and adapted and furnished by Mrs Walker in 1911 for use as a home for girls. [Our Waifs and Strays Jul 1911 pp146-7]
In 1911 the Home was described as having a beautiful garden "and the surroundings are in every way delightful". The first residents came from the Lampson Home for Girls in Dulwich, London. The Home was dedicated by the Archbishop of York on 27 July 1911. [OWS Oct 1911, pp176-7]
In 1924, as part of a three-day school trip, two of the residents were chosen to go to the Wembley Exhibition, London. In addition to the exhibition, they also went sight-seeing in London. [OWS Aug 1924, p131]
A new building, West Garth at 140 Acomb Road, was purchased on 25 October 1945 and the original building at 4 West Bank Terrace was sold in 1946. [Register of Property and Leases, AR81.0445] This move coincided with the change of use from a girls' home to a nursery. [OWS May-June 1947]
In 1965 the Nursery was extended with money raised from an appeal sponsored by the Archbishop of York, Dr Donald Coggan. The extension included a baby room with an adjoining bathroom for six babies, a new heated shelter for 24 prams and a prefabricated bungalow for the nurses. A total of 23 babies and toddlers were then housed at the Nursery. [Gateway Dec 1965, p12]
In 1970 the building was described as being "large and gabled [and] set in a big garden where the children can play at the front and where the flowers and vegetables grow at the back. Right at the bottom of the garden are the nurses' quarters where they can spend their leisure time." At this time, the 24 children who lived there were divided into four family groups, each with their own bedroom, dayroom, staff nurses and assistant students. The aim of these groups was to give the children "a little more of the individuality of an ordinary family and lessen the feeling of being drowned by everyone else" [Brothers & Sisters Easter 1970, p5].
In August 1971 a Day Nursery opened at the Home with places for seven children (see separate NAR) [Annual Report 1971, p6].
By 1973 the role of the Nursery had changed from long term residential care to short term care. [Gateway Winter 1973, p12]. At this point Godfrey Walker Nursery effectively ceased to be a residential care home and was renamed West Garth in around 1977. Please see related name authority record for West Garth for further information.
