BiographySecond son of botanist John Hutton Balfour (1808-1884). Specialised in botany during his education at Edinburgh University, graduating with a BSc in 1873. Graduated MB in 1877 and MD in 1883. Botanist on the transit of Venus expedition to Rodriquez Island in 1874. His report on the flora of the island established him as a plant taxonomist and he gained a DSc. Collected plants in Socotra 1879-1880. Professor of Botany at Glasgow from 1879. Became Professor of Botany at Oxford in 1884.

One of the founding members of the ANNALS OF BOTANY in 1887, he was the first editor of the journal. He served as Chairman of the Annals of Botany Company from 1903-1912.

He returned to Edinburgh in 1888 as Professor of Botany at the university, queen's botanist in Scotland and regius keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden. He was considered an authority on Asiatic plants, particularly rhododendrons and primulas.

Elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1884 and created KBE in 1920.
