BiographyGraduated from Christ Church, Oxford in 1876 after reading classics. Spent the following three years training as an engineer. Following the suggestion of William Thiselton-Dyer he studied botany in Germany from 1880-1882 under Julius von Sachs at the University of Wurzburg where he gained his PhD in 1881. Following his return to London he became assistant to Daniel Oliver at University College London.

He served as lecturer at the Royal College of Science, London 1884-1892. He became Keeper of the Jodrell Laboratory at Kew from 1892-1906. He also served as President of the Linnean Society 1908-1912 and President of the Microscopical Society 1904-1906.

He was one of the founding members of the ANNALS OF BOTANY and contributed to the journal. Scott served as Chairman of the Annals of Botany Company from 1912. He had served as Vice-Chairman of the company since 1903 and remained in post until his death in 1934.

He was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1880 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1894. Scott received a royal medial in 1906 and the Darwin medal in 1926.
