HistoryAfter graduating from Cambridge University, Hill remained there to conduct botanical research. He was appointed university demonstrator in 1899 and lecturer in 1904 following his return from an expedition to the Andes of Bolivia and Peru. In 1907, he became the assistant director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, becoming full director in 1922. In this position, Hill continued his botanical research, focusing on ornamental garden and glasshouse plants in the wild, and natural plant hybrids. The herbarium at Kew was, during this time, one of the most important in the world and Hill had a large part to play in maintaining this reputation. He was also successful in obtaining extra funds, which resulted in improvements to several of the facilities at the gardens, including the herbarium, laboratories and a new banana house. As director of Kew, Hill was also botanical adviser to the secretary of state for the colonies and chief horticultural adviser to the Imperial War Graves Commission. The Royal Horticultural Society awarded him its Victoria medal of honour as well as a Veitch memorial medal for services to horticulture in 1936.
