HistorySir David Prain studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen and then earned the further qualification of MB ChM in 1883 at the University of Edinburgh. In 1884, Prain joined the Indian Medical Service as a physician and botanist and was appointed curator at the Calcutta herbarium. In 1888, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a year later, was promoted to director of the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. During this time, he also served as Professor of Botany at the Medical College of Calcutta before becoming director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1905. During this time, Prain often found himself embroiled in long-standing employment and financial disputes with his garden staff and the Kew Gardens trade union, but was appreciated for his willingness to listen and delegate. From 1916 to 1919, he served as President to the Linnean Society.
