HistoryCotton completed a degree in botany at the Royal College of Science in 1901. Subsequently, he became a demonstrator there before moving on to the University of Manchester, where he developed an interest in fungi. In 1904, he was appointed assistant to fellow botanist, George Massee at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Here, he worked mainly on algae and fungi until 1915, when he took charge of the Plant Pathology Laboratory at Kew. He became mycologist to the Board of Agriculture in 1920, but then returned to Kew two years later to become Keeper of the Herbarium. He retained this post until his retirement in 1946. Amongst Cotton's other achievements were his election to President of the Bristsh Mycological Society in 1913 and President of the Linnean Society of London from 1943 to 1946. He receieved an OBE for services to plant pathology in 1934 and published numerous papers on this subject, as well as on fungi and algae throughout his career.
