BiographyIn April 1883, Bean started as a student gardener at Kew Gardens. In Oct 1883, he was promoted to Sub-Foreman of orchid and other tropical collections; becoming Foreman of the Temperate House Department in 1888; Foreman of the Arboretum in 1892; Assistant Curator in 1900; and Curator, 1922-1929.

In 1893 Bean was a founder of the Kew Guild. He visited Germany and Austria (1908), the USA (1910) and Italy and Dalmatia (1912) on arboricultural missions. In 1914 Bean was seconded to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
