HistoryChemist to the war department at Woolwich in January 1856, retiring in 1888. Abel became the organizing secretary of the Imperial Institute from 1887, remaining honorary secretary and director from its opening in 1893 until 1901 when it was transferred to the Board of Trade. He was made CB in 1877, knighted in 1883, KCB in 1891, a baronet in 1893, and GCVO in 1901.
