HistoryBirdwood took part in the Persian expedition of 1856-1857 as a naval surgeon, and then worked with social and cultural institutions in Bombay: he was chair of anatomy and physiology, and then of botany and materia medica at Grant Medical College, registrar to the University of Bombay, curator of the government museum, secretary to the Bombay branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, a founder of the Victoria Botanical Gardens and a member of the municipality. Elected sheriff of Bombay in 1864. He returned to England in 1868.

Birdwood was in charge of the Indian exhibits at the Paris Exhibition of 1867, and in 1871 the India Office put him in charge of the Indian collections in a series of special exhibitions held at South Kensington. In 1875 he was made Keeper of the Indian Museum and assistant reporter on the products of India. In 1879 Birdwood was appointed special assistant in the revenue and statistical department of the India Office. Birdwood retired from the India Office in 1905.

Birdwood was knighted in 1881 and made KCIE in 1887.
