HistoryAfter studying botany in Vienna, Stapf recieved a PhD. In 1882, he became assistant professor of fellow botanist, Anton Kerner. In 1885, Stapf received sponsorship to conduct an expedition to South and Western Persia, during which several new species were discovered. After professional tensions developed between Stapf and Kerner, Stapf moved to England, where he worked as Keeper of the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 1909 to 1920. In 1908, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1927, he was awarded the Linnean Medal.
