BiographyPhysician, naturalist and collector, Sir Hans Sloane bequeathed his collection of over 71,000 objects to King George II for the nation in his will. He died in 1753 and an Act of Parliament extablished the British Museum. It opened to the public in 1759, free of admission. The museum is still open today and stands on its original site in Bloomsbury, London. It recieves six million visitors per year.
