HistoryFrom an early age, Massee developed an interest in natural history and travelled on a botanical expedition to Panama and Ecuador where he collected orchids and other plants. Back in Yorkshire, his illustrations of fungi attracted the attention of the first head of mycology at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Massee began a series of publications on fungi whilst living in London and worked briefly at the Natural History Museum. In 1893, he became the Principle Assistant in Cryptograms at Kew, and retained this post until he retired in 1915. In 1896, Massee helped to found the British Mycological Society, and served as its first president until 1898. During his career, he published over 250 scientific and popular books, papers and articles on fungi, natural history, plant pathology and myxomycetes, and was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour in 1902.
