HistoryA sinologist of Baltic German ethnicity and correspondent member of the Académie française. Less known as a botanist, having his own herbarium in the mountain close to Pekin. Starting in 1880, Bretschneider sent dried specimens to RBG, Kew. Has plant species named in his honour (Bretschneidera sinensis) and published books in the field of botany.
