HistoryA colonial administrator for the British Empire, Haynes-Smith was sent to British Guiana as Solicitor General at the start of his career. In 1874, he was appointed Attorney-General before serving as acting Governor ten years later. In 1888, he was appointed Governor of Leeward Islands and then transferred to the Bahamas. From 1898 to 1904, he served as High Commissioner of Cyprus. He was knighted in 1890, in the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
