Biography	A department of the British Government responsible for the administration of the British army. It developed from the Council of War: a grouping of the king and his senior military commanders, which managed wars and campaigns, and which began with Charles II. In 1964, the War Office's responsibilities were transferred to the Ministry of Defence.
