HistoryA diplomatist and explorer, Hosie joined the Chinese consular service in 1876. While posted in China, he set out on a series of travels, the result of which was his first book, THREE YEARS IN WESTERN CHINA, published in 1889. He then went on to serve in Canton, Wenchow, Chefoo, Amoy, Tamsui and Wuhu. In 1894, he took charge of the consulate at Newchwang. His main duties consisted of overseeing the defence of British trade in Manchuria but he also continued to travel and write. In 1903, he was appointed first consul-general at Chengtu in Szechwan. Whilst here, he compiled work on the products of the province, which he later published. From 1905 to 1909, he served as acting commercial attaché to the legation at Peking, in which post, he completed pioneering work on trade. He received a knighthood in 1907, in recognition of his achievements. In 1909, Hosie became British delegate at the Shanghai International Opium Commisssion and arranged proceedings for India to stop the export of opium to China if China abandoned the cultivation of the opium poppy. He retired in 1912 and relocated to the Isle of Wight, though he returned briefly to China in 1919 to 1920, where he served as special attaché in Peking. Throughout his career, Hosie sent thousands of specimens to Kew, Hong Kong and Singapore; Kew named an order of tropical tree after him, ORMOSIA HOSIEI.
