HistoryAged seventeen, Hance entered the civil service of Hong Kong from which he transferred in 1854 to the superintendency of trade in China. Shortly after this, he was posted to the British consulate at Canton, where he acted as consul in 1881 and again in 1883. In 1886, he was appointed acting consul at Amoy, where he died of a fever. Throughout his life, Hance devoted his leisure time to the study of botany, occasionally working collaboratively with director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Sir Joseph Hooker.
