BiographyNicholson trained initially under his father, who was also a gardener, before going on to spend two years at the municipal nurseries of La Muette, Paris. After returning to England, he was appointed clerk to John Smith, the curator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, succeeding him in 1886. Until this time, Nicholson had spent much time studying British flowering plants and published several works upon the subject. His herbarium of British plants was eventually presented to the University of Aberdeen shortly before he died. His herbarium of trees and shrubs was presented to Kew in 1889. In 1893, he was elected first preseident of the Kew Guild, and also became an associate of the Linnean Society in 1886. He was awarded the Veitch memorial medal of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1894 and the Victoria medal of honour in 1897. In his honour, the Nicholson Prize was eventually founded by the Royal Horticultural Society.
