HistoryBrace was born in Nassau and educated in London. He later returned to the Bahamas and devoted himself to an independent study of plants and birds. The govenor of the island, William Robinson, sent duplicates of Brace's plant collection to be determined at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. Kew recieved more than 500 specimens between 1877 and 1880. Brace was later offered the position of curator at the Botanic Garden in Calcutta (1882-86). He was recommended by Joseph Hooker and William Thiselton-Dyer at Kew Gardens to join the Linnean Society in 1883. He was later offered a position in Edinburgh but returned to Nassau to study Bahama flora. He collected plants in the Bahamas (1975-80).
