BiographyThe National Museum and Art Gallery was established in 1892 as the Royal Victoria Institute and is the national museum of Trinidad and Tobago. It was built as a Science and Art Museum to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The insitute was used for research and exhibitions of natural history and archaeology. The building presents the colonial style of the West Indies of the nineteenth century. By 1905 the Institute had become a centre for social and academic functions. In May 1920 the building was destroyed by fire. Many of the collections were lost and only the external walls remained. The rebuilt building reopened in June 1923.
