HistoryForrest worked as Assistant in the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, 1902. He made seven plant collecting expeditions in Yunnan, 1904-1932. He introduced many new species of Rhododendron and Primula.

Fellow of the Linnean Society, 1924. Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH), 1921. Veitch Memorial Medal (VMM ), 1927.
