HistoryAs an astronomer Hinks is known for his work in determining the distance from the Sun to the Earth. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society, and awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.

In 1903 Hinks undertook training in surveying at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, Kent. In 1908, Hinks held a lectureship in surveying and cartography at the Cambridge School of Geography. In 1911 he was elected as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, becoming assistant secretary in 1912/1913, and secretary in 1915.

Hinks was joint secretary of the Mount Everest Committee, formed by the Alpine Club and the Royal Geographical Society to coordinate the 1921 British Mount Everest Reconnaissance Expedition and subsequent Britsh expeditions to Mount Everest until 1947.
