HistorySchlagintweit was a German explorer of Central Asia.

In 1846-1848, with his brother Adolf Schlagintweit, he published a scientific study of the Alps.

In 1854, Hermann, along with his brothers Adolf and Robert Schlagintweit, was commissoned by the East India Company to make scientific investigations of the East India Company's territory, and to study the Earth's magnetic field.

They travelled through the Deccan, into the Himalayas, Karakoram and Kunlun moutains. Hermann and Robert were the first Europeans to cross the Kunlun, and for this achievement Hermann received the title "Sakünlünski".

Hermann visited Nepal before returning to Europe.
