HistoryEldest son of Francis Marshall Ward. Worked in laboratories in Germany in the year 1880. Investigated coffee leaf disease in Ceylon for the years 1880-1882 on behalf of the Colonial Office,but could not find a way to prevent it. In 1883 he married Selina Mary Kingdon, the eldest daughter of Francis Kingdon of Exeter. The marriage produced a daughter, Winifred Mary Kingdon-Ward, and a son, Francis Kingdon-Ward. He then pursued a successful career in acadaemia. In 1892-1899 he researched the bacteriology of water in collaboration with Percy Frankland, this time on behalf of the Royal Society. Later, he researched the impact of rusts on the genus Bromus. He was one of the founding members of the ANNALS OF BOTANY journal.
