HistoryJoseph Dalton Hooker was the son of eminent botanist, Sir William Jackson Hooker. In 1839, he graduated in medicine at Glasgow University. Shortly after this, he joined Captain James Clark Ross's Antarctic expedition, during which, he collected many plant specimens. In 1846, Hooker took up position as botanist to the Geological Survey of Great Britian and began work on paleobotany, following which he embarked upon an expedition to the Himalayas and India from 1847 to 1851. The journals he kept during this time were published in 1854 and dedicated to Charles Darwin, along with several other works based on the flora and plant geography he had encountered, which were published throughout the 1850s. Hooker followed this voyage with further expeditions to Palestine in 1860, Morocco in 1871 and the Western United States in 1877. As a respected scientist, Hooker was appointed assistant director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1855 and ten years later, succeeded his father as full director, in which position he remained for twenty years. It was during this time that Kew's prominence as a world-renowned botanic garden was formed. During his life, Hooker published numerous scientific papers and books, the largest of which, FLORA OF BRITISH INDIA, earned him the title, Knight of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India in 1897. In 1907, he was awarded the Order of Merit.
