HistoryWilliam Thiselton-Dyer graduated from Oxford University with a degree in mathematics, in 1865. During his time as a student, he began to take an interest in natural science and followed this up with a second degree in this subject. He graduated in 1867. Folowing this, he became professor of natural history at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, and then moved to Dublin to become professor of botany at the Royal College of Science. In 1872, he was appointed as professor of botany at the Royal Horticultural Society in London and was also employed by Sir Joseph Hooker at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. During this time, he also became involved in teaching biology and botany under the Department of Science and Art at South Kensington. By 1875, Thiselton-Dyer had been appointed assistant-director of Kew, overseeing its colonial activities and taking charge of the Jodrell Laboratory until 1892. In 1885, he was appointed director of Kew and implememted improvements to the gardens, library and herbarium builing, as well as the establishment of a forestry museum.
