HistoryIn 1860, Hemsley began his employment at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as an Improver. He then became the Kew herbarium's Assistant for India before rising to become Keeper of the Herbarium and Library. He wrote a number of botanical works during his lifetime and also received the Victoria Medal of Honour from the Royal Horticultural Society.
