DescriptionLetters to the Shaen family. This file contains 13 original loose letters, written whilst was away on different tours. The letters refer to Miss North's travel plans and experiences and individuals that she has met as well as local customs, characters and artefacts. She also writes about various plants, which she was considering painting. The details for the individual letters are as follows-
MN/1/2/1: This is a letter to Miss Shaen from on board a steamer between Yokohama & Kobe, dated 19th November 1875. This letter also contains a number of small sketches by Miss North.
MN/1/2/2: This is a letter to Miss Shaen from Jambusan, Sarawak, dated 14th May 1876.
MN/1/2/3: This is a letter to 'Margaret' from Jubbalpore, dated 9th March 1878.
MN/1/2/4: This is a letter to 'Maggie' from Almorah, dated 13th August 1878. This letter also contains a small sketch by Miss North.
MN/1/2/5: This is a letter to 'Maggie' from 3 Victoria Street, London, dated Spring 1882.
MN/1/2/6: This is a letter to Mrs. Shaen from Victoria Street, dated 2nd July 1882.
MN/1/2/7: This is a letter to 'Maggie' from Wynberg, Cape Town, dated 3rd September 1882.
MN/1/2/8: This is a letter to Mrs. Allman from Ceres, dated 29th October 1882.
MN/1/2/9: This is a letter to 'Maggie' from Tongate, Natal, dated 16th April 1883.
MN/1/2/10: This is a letter to Dr. Allman from Praslin, Seychelles, dated 4th November 1883. This letter also contains a number of sketches, including one of the artist herself painting by a large tree.
MN/1/2/11: This is a letter to Dr. Allman from Victoria Street, dated 24th August 1884.
MN/1/2/12: This is a letter to 'Maggie' from Holmbury St. Mary's, dated 28th August 1884.
MN/1/2/13: This is a letter to 'Maggie' from Santiago, dated 27th November 1884.
(Dr. G.J. Allman was a zoologist and President of The Linnean Society of London 1874-1881. He married Hannah Louisa Shaen (d.1890), 3rd daughter of Samuel Shaen of Crix, near Colchester, Essex. "Maggie" was probably the eldest of the three Shaen daughters, being always addressed as Miss Shaen on envelopes. She lived at 15 Upper Phillimore Gardens, Kensington, London.)
