TitleThis Sporting Life
DescriptionThis Sporting Life (1963) was Lindsay Anderson's first feature film and the last of the British 'new wave' (or 'kitchen sink') films of the early 1960s. Based on a novel by David Storey about a rugby league player and his troubled relationship with his widowed landlady, the film starred Richard Harris and Rachel Roberts. The film received a mixed reception on its release, some critics unsure of its unusual structure (like the novel the film used a series of flashbacks to unfold the story) and strong emotional content. The film was well received at the Cannes film festival where Richard Harris won the best actor award. There is an extensive photographic record of the film including location scouting for the film in the north of England; behind the scenes views; promotional stills of scenes from the film; and Lindsay Anderson and Richard Harris at the Cannes Film Festival. Contact strips and negatives of photographs taken by Lindsay Anderson on a trip to Tahiti in 1961 to persuade Richard Harris (who was filming Mutiny on the Bounty) to star in the film are also present. A small amount of production material and correspondence relating to the film is also present and there is a large collection of press cuttings from the UK, US and Europe
