TitleIf You Were There (Wham! in China)
DescriptionIn April 1985 Wham! became the first western pop group to perform in China. The band's management team hired Anderson to direct a documentary recording this historic event. Unfortunately this was an ill-fated project with Anderson being removed from the film in October 1985. His portrayal of the Chinese tour did not meet with the approval of the band or their management. Anderson produced his own version of the film from footage salvaged before his removal form the project entitled If you were there. A new version entitled Foreign Skies was cut and played at Wham!'s farewell concert at Wembley Stadium on 28 June 1986. Lindsay Anderson's film was never released, although a copy of his version is present in the collection on U-Matic tape (LA 1/10/3/7). In comparison to his other film projects in the 1970s and 1980s very little material relating to this production is present. There is little (apart from tourist brochures) relating to the shooting of the film in China. However LA went to great lengths to record the circumstances surrounding his removal from the project and much of the correspondence reflects this (1/10/3)
