Description | A visit to the cinema to see My Darling Clementine in 1946 began Anderson's life-long admiration for the director John Ford. He championed Ford's films in the pages of Sequence magazine and travelled to Ireland to meet the director in 1950. This was the first of several meetings over the next thirty years.
Anderson combined his personal recollections of meeting Ford with a thorough critical analysis of his films in his 1981 book About John Ford. Anderson diverts from the critical consensus of Ford's work in places, particularly in his view of The Searchers which he does not consider one of Ford's masterpieces. The book also includes the reminiscences of writers and actors who worked with Ford which provide further insights into the director's method of filmmaking.
