TitleUnrealised film projects
DescriptionCorrespondence files and accompanying material including scripts, film treatments and notes re proposed films. There is a small amount of miscellaneous material present for projects in the 1950s and 1960s but the bulk of the material relates to the period between 1976 and 1994.
In 1979 Anderson secured a deal with Orion Pictures to develop a number of projects in Hollywood including Empire, a historical epic about the Indian Mutiny of 1857, and Dress Gray, a drama about a murder at an elite American military college. Anderson abandoned these Hollywood projects in 1981 when funding was secured for Britannia Hospital.
Following the critical savaging and commercial failure of Britannia Hospital Anderson found it increasingly difficult to make films. He worked with David Sherwin (the writer of If., O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital) on a number of projects including a sequel to If., a 'melodramatic comedy' based on the life of Stalin and a true-crime story, The Monster Butler.
Other projects for which files are present include proposed adaptations of works by Arnold Bennett (The Grand Babylon Hotel), Evelyn Waugh (Vile Bodies), Noel Coward (Hay Fever) and Chekhov (The Cherry Orchard); a historical drama based on the life of Edward II; an expose of the adult film industry (Report from the Sex Factory); and a film version of The Old Crowd a television drama written by Alan Bennett which Anderson had directed for ITV
