Description | Personal collection of photographs taken and collected by Lindsay Anderson of family and friends and visits to various countries including USA, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, USSR, India, China (1950s - 1990s). Also miscellaneous photographs of Lindsay Anderson (1923 - 1994) and of the Anderson/Sleigh family (1870s - 1990s). Many of the photographs are contained in albums compiled by Anderson. The majority of albums date from the 1970s and 1980s and consist of holiday photographs and family and friends. Earlier albums contain photographs of Anderson as a schoolboy and student at Oxford. Photographs of Anderson taken during his military service are also included. A number of albums from the 1950s include photographs of Anderson directing his first films for Sutliffe Engineering Ltd and working and socialising with his 'Free Cinema' colleagues. A selection of these albums can be viewed on our Flickr pages.
There are also contact strips and negatives of rolls of film taken by Anderson during the 1950s and 1960s. These include photographs of family and friends and visits to Europe, India and the US. Events recorded include the visit of the English Stage Company to Moscow in 1957 (there is also an album of photographs of this trip), marches to Aldermaston organised by CND and the 1965 Delhi Film Festival. A large number of loose photographs (and negatives) are also present and these have been arranged into files by period and/or person where appropriate. There are also over 1,500 colour transparencies of photographs taken by Anderson between 1964 - 1975 of family and friends, holidays, film festivals and London scenes.
